The cist is a megalithic, communal burial form from neolithic times (in this case about 4000 years old) and the pictured Jättekullen cist is the largest of its kind in Sweden.
These types of prehistoric megalithic structures were popularly believed to be the work of giants (hence the name), a kind of being that is frequently showing up in Scandinavian folklore as well as in the works of the learned as late as during the 17th century. The cists were built by communal farmers rather than supernatural beings, however.
