During the Iron Age, and in all probability earlier, what is today southern Sweden was mainly inhabited by the Geats. By most accounts this tribe had a strong tradition of farming, and the Västergötland region, in which the pictured field is located, was part of what can be considered their heartland. To this day Västergötland in general, and the part of Västergötland that is called Skaraborg in particular, remains one of the most agriculturally productive parts of Sweden.
